Consent to participate in research

The Research Project

Thank you for your interest in participating in the Bilingual Voice Comparison Study. This study examines the perception of bilingual voices, to further investigate the acoustic parameters that influence voice quality and speaker identification in speech perception. This research study has been approved by Simon Fraser University’s Office of Research Ethics (ORE) [REB#: 20190099].

General Information

Language Background Questionnaire

First, you will complete a background questionnaire, which involves a few demographic questions about your language background, where you have lived, and your age and sex. This information will be used to analyze the patterns in the collected data. The questionnaire will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

Perception Experiment

Next, you will participate perception experiment will ask you to listen to a series of speech sounds. You will be asked to respond to what you hear by selecting a response as shown on the screen. The experiment will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

Inclusion Criteria

Participants must be at least 14 years old.

Privacy

Participation is anonymous; you will not be asked for your name or contact information. Your experimental data will be saved and archived on a password-protected online server. Only investigators conducting the experiment will have access to your information. Your data will be presented in de-identified or aggregate form if your data is included in academic presentations and journal articles.

Your Participation is Voluntary

You are free to withdraw from this study at any time. Simply close the browser window of your device to stop participating. The investigator will discard data from all incomplete experiments.
